How One Scooter Sparked a Whole New Chapter at Fraser Shores Retirement Village

When Margaret and her husband were looking for a retirement village, they explored many across New South Wales, thinking that might be the place to settle. But once they visited Queensland, everything changed. The warm climate, welcoming community, and beautiful homes at Fraser Shores in Hervey Bay immediately won them over.

“We’ve never looked back,” Margaret says. “Fraser Shores is wonderful. Coming here changed my life.”

What stood out most was the abundance of opportunities to get involved. “There are so many things you can join when you go to a retirement village. For me, it was like a smorgasbord of new experiences,” she explains. And that’s how the scooter club was born.

Margaret never planned to start a scooter club. In fact, she didn’t even want a scooter. “I was still driving and riding a bike,” she recalls. “But one day, my neighbour said he was trying to sell his partner’s mobility scooter. I bought it—not really knowing why. Then I thought, well, what am I going to do with a mobility scooter I don’t want? So, I started a scooter club.”

That spontaneous decision quickly blossomed into something bigger. Fraser Shores residents now participate in Hervey Bay’s annual scooter convoy. “This is our third year in it,” Margaret says. “And every year, we choose a fun theme. One year it was ‘Kings and Queens,’ and I went all out—sewing royal gowns with big collars and ermine trim, plus golden canopies for our ‘royal coaches.’ We had 21 people involved and absolutely loved it.”

Margaret moved to Fraser Shores in her 50s, a decision she still considers one of the best she’s ever made. “The younger you go into a retirement village, the more you can do—and the more people you meet. It’s been wonderful.”

She laughs as she reflects on how busy her days are.

“You can’t get bored here. And honestly, if anyone says they are, well—they’ve got rocks in their head!”

For Margaret, retirement didn’t mean slowing down—it meant opening the door to new experiences, friendships, and a whole lot of fun on two (or three) wheels.
