Rowing Through Retirement: John's Active Life at Tangara, West End
Active Retirement Living in West End: John's Rowing Life at Tangara
I've been living in West End for about 15 years and found Tangara, and it was just the right choice. I walked into this unit and saw the beautiful view over the city and that sold me straight away. I love living in West End because it's so central to everything and obviously it's so close to the river.
I started rowing at school in 1969 and it's just been a great journey. I'm still rowing with guys that I went to school with and rowing's taken me all around the world as well. Being a member of Toowong Rowing Club, it's just a continuous stepping stone from youth rowing right up to masters rowing to the point where you can't row anymore—and then you just turn up to Thursday morning breakfast and enjoy the camaraderie of all your mates anyway.
I've been here since February and my brother was living down at Scarborough. And I said to Pete,
"Mate, why don't you have a look at the units here?"
And he decided to make the change. The good thing is that I get to see his kids and he gets to see mine. So it's been a fantastic family relationship with BlueCare.
I think my next chapter in life is not missing any opportunities. I head to Boston next week to row in a big regatta there. It means that I can just lock the door and walk out and I know everything's safe. My time is my own and I don't have to put it into gardens or maintenance. And I know lots of people like that sort of thing, but I'd rather go camping and rowing and tripping around as much as I can. So for me, it's just the perfect step forward in this next section of life.
