Star of the Sea Elders Village sits high above the ocean on Thursday Island, where two wings of large rooms hug the cliffside, offering sweeping views of the sky above, the sea below, the coral reefs and the palm trees.
When you make Star of the Sea your home, you will sit with people from all over the Torres Strait, from Boigu to Bamaga, and from Mabuaig to Mer. Share a meal or a drink in the magnificent Ocean View Room, enjoy the garden, or observe the ever-changing sea. Visit the chapel or take an outing on our site-owned bus.
Our residents are a vital part of the wider community and participate in cultural events such as the Coming of the Light Festival. Traditional culture and knowledge are respected and supported, with activities based on what is important to you, from basket weaving to traditional dancing, storytelling to music, hymns and songs.
We take pride in empowering Elders in your day-to-day lives and improving health outcomes for Torres Strait Islander communities. We understand that we must care for not just the body, but the spirit and the whole community’s wellness.
Many of our staff are local and speak language or Torres Strait Creole. We do our best to recognise Ailan Kastom, working with the Island groups to ensure we provide culturally safe and appropriate care, so we can build a stronger future together for the communities of the Torres Strait Islands.
Our services are delivered by Pinangba, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander group of services, where family and belonging are at the heart of everything we do. We are part of the UnitingCare family and operated by BlueCare. To find out more about life in an aged care home, read BlueCare’s Resident Information Book.
