BlueCare Wirunya volunteers share their unique talents
BlueCare volunteers play a crucial role in BlueCare’s circle of care – enhancing the wellbeing and quality of life of every resident.
Indeed, warmth, kindness and dedication are the hallmarks of BlueCare’s Wirunya volunteers who were nominees at UnitingCare’s 2023 Full Circle and Reconciliation Awards.
Despite all leading very busy personal lives, they each commit their time and energy to ensure residents enjoy life to the fullest.
The volunteers graciously contribute in big and small ways and are at the heart of what BlueCare was built upon: compassion, love, service and community.
“Our volunteers all have special qualities, every single one of them,’’ says Kerry O’Loughlin, BlueCare Carbrook Wirunya Aged Care Facility Activities Officer. “They’re all very dedicated and they put their residents first, always.”
For John Day, seeing his in-laws and mother receive great care at BlueCare Wirunya was all the motivation he needed to volunteer.
“It takes time and effort to prepare for each Tuesday morning but gives such satisfaction seeing the pleasure on residents’ faces,” he says. “I know then it is all worthwhile.”
The Wirunya team offers a large range of activities including:
- Community outings.
- Bingo.
- Armchair travel.
- Music.
- Life stories.
- Nail care.
- Gardening.
“They’re not people who like to have a fuss made of them but at times they do need to have a fuss, because they’re backbone of the service we’re running here,” Kerry said. “We can’t really function without them – we need them, and the residents need them.”
