Local Brisbane artists are using their creativity to brighten the walls at local BlueCare aged care facilities to improve visual stimulation for residents living with dementia.

BlueCare Rothwell and BlueCare Kenmore have been working with artists at Tailored Artworks to design murals and paintings to suit the residents and atmosphere at the homes.

BlueCare North Coast General Manager Sue-Ellen Smith said the murals were part of a wider initiative to help people living with dementia by improving visual stimulation within the facilities.

“This is just one of many initiatives being implemented across our services, especially in our Memory Support Units, to facilitate best practice and quality personalised care, for those living with dementia.”

“The artists incorporated everyday objects and symbols inspired by the local environment into the murals, to brighten the living areas and create a feeling of comfort and safety for the residents,” said Sue-Ellen.

BlueCare Rothwell Integrated Service Manager Paul Vallance said the murals have been a huge success with residents, their families and staff.

“The positive affect the murals had on our residents was quickly noticeable. The artwork has helped deflect and distract the residents by creating a fun, safe and interactive space for them.”

BlueCare Kenmore Integrated Service Manager Michelle Thomas said the murals were a wonderful example of how the service provides tailored support to clients and is focusing on improving the lives of residents living with dementia.

The mastermind behind the murals, Sharron Tancred from Tailored Artworks said she enjoys creating pieces that can make an impact to the community and people’s lives.

“I wanted to create a space that was welcoming and provide visual stimulation through the use of symbols in the design.”

“It was important for me to create artwork that makes the residents feel safe, secure and happy in their surroundings,” said Sharron.
