Tropical cyclone - Be prepared in your village

Dear Retirement Village Residents,

As most of you will be aware, Tropical Cyclone Alfred is forecast to turn towards South-East Queensland and is expected to make landfall on Thursday. At this stage the track is unknown however regions from Bundaberg to Northern NSW are being asked to monitor and be prepared.

We are being warned to prepare for possible strong winds, heavy rainfall and flash flooding later this week.

Management and staff are currently making preparations where possible and ask that you also prepare around your home for possible cyclonic or storm conditions. Suggested preparations include storing away light outdoor furniture and retracting external awnings and blinds etc.

You should also consider your own disaster management plan including ensuring supply of medications, food and water. Keep your mobile phone fully charged and check that you have a charged torch, battery operated radio etc in event of power outage. You may also want to consider checking on neighbours.

Should the cyclone or severe weather conditions reach our village, please remain inside your home and keep your radio on for alerts and updates. Do not go outside until the all clear has been given.

Please be advised that village staff may not be able to attend the village during or after a severe weather event and the village office and community facilities may be closed.

If you require emergency assistance, the emergency call system will still operate without power using the back-up battery, however may be affected by a loss of power to the mobile phone towers. In this event, you should contact the emergency services on 000.

If you experience damage to your home and require tarpaulins, the State Emergency Service can be contacted on 13 25 00.
